Hey. I'm so bummed. As you may have read in a past post of mine, that I was excited because I was going to get sand substrate and start up my tank with an extra cycled filter that I have running in my other goldfish tank. I was so happy! I thought that after I bought the test kits and tested the water after about a week or so, and if the water was good, I could start buying fish.

I planned on buying the sand from Home-Depot.


BUT....


They don't have it because its not in season right now. I really don't want to spend all the money getting it at the LFS (if they even have it!) I only need about 10-15lbs.

Anyone have any other suggestions on where to get sand?
 
Thanks, the swimming pool stores are closed for the season, its winter here, with 2+ft of snow.....would the sand in reptile tanks (freshly purchased) work?
 
In my cichlid tank, I have a half rock half sand substrate. I got the sand from the local lumbar yard. Its called cilica(sp) sand, its used in sand blasting. It's a white color, and very fine. I got a hundred pound back for less then $10.

Silica sand works, as Cookie mentioned. Also, Play Sand works. Usually Home Depot carries that too. The only reason I dislike Play Sand is because it's not nearly as clean as Pool Filter Sand as far as dust is concerned. Also, the Play Sand is sometimes not the prettiest color. You might call around to some different hardware stores. They may have Paving Sand that could work, if it were the right color.
 
I can pretty much tell you that lumber yards are pretty much always open even if it is winter. Most (not all) builders will still work in the winter so they have to be. At least here in Utah we stay open at the lumber yard I work at even if it drops a good couple of feet overnight. Could be different where you are but I doubt it.
 
When I went to home-depot to look for play sand they didnt have it because its winter, but they did have TUBE sand....would that work? Its not the prettiest but I kinda like its natural look.
 
I'm actually suprised that your pool stores are closed (you've checked?). I just bought a bag of filter sand from the pool place this January when we had a good 15" of snow on the ground.
