This is the information about my tank

2001: I bough this 55g tank, with a 404 Fluval filter, without any knowledge at the time i just followed the store 's advice about waiting for a few weeks before putting some fish into the tank.I had many different fish (plecos, elephant noses, guppies, guramies, mollies, zebras, beta etc) everthing went fine and the tank was succesful for 3 years, i didnt have to do anything other than feeding and cleaning.

i moved to a new place and i left the tank with family members.

October 2004: they went on vacation for a week and when they came back the filter wasnt working and all fish were nearly dead, they gave away the fish and the tank was empty for a month or so.

Jan 2nd 2005: i decided to bring the aquarium to my new place and restart.
afraid of having bad bacteria on the filter i bought new biologic media and charbon to put into the filtre, i kept the old sponges.
2 weeks of running with 2 mollies, 5 neons and 5 zebras, 5 guppies on it I decided to buy a elephant nose and a pleco.the ph was 7,2 and the amonia and nitrite was at 0, so i tought everthing was fine.

All fish were fine but then ...

3 neons just disapeared (one body found), one mollie died... i kept doing the tests and everthing was ok, so i tought that could be the elephant nose who ate 2 neons(someone gave me this hint here on the message board),I thought too that the other neon and the mollie were just dead without serious reasons .

But when i lost my elephant nose and my pleco only 2 days apart, i was very disapointed and didnt't have a clue what went wrong. They looked so healthy in the morning and in a few hours my elephant nose was swimming funny and then struggled for an hour or so until it turned up dead. I felt so bad not knowing what to do to save him.. my pleco the same, he tried to suck
on the tank walls but was sliding to the ground and then he died.. both without any mark of injury or any sign of disease.

I got rid of all my natural plants. Some were brown and others had small worm like on them that i was afraid could be a reason for my dead fishes.

Now i have an aquarium with 5 zebras, 2 neons and 2 mollies, and a few small snails that may have came with the plants... i want to start over and do things right from the beginning, can you please give me step by step what im supposed to do from now on?

Thanks alot

So sorry for your bad experience. I don't know, if it was empty, I'd clean the tank well with salt and water, get rid of the filter media, buy new and start over with the cycling (no fish). Wait and see what others have to say. Good luck now.
