Just today my sister brought home 6 little tetras for one of my tanks. they're no longer than one to one and a half inches, but I'm having trouble identifying them. They're rather transparent some places, and colored a shiny gold and/or silver other places. they have a large black spot where the anal fin "splits". I'm sorry I dont have a picture, does anyone think they know what kind they are?

I also need to confirm a few things. I hear tetras are rather sensitive to salt. Is this true? What else do I need to know about tetras being different from other fish? (I'm sorry I haven't had good experience with tetras overall)
thanks for the help.

Is it a Moenkhausia oligolepis (Glassy Tetra)? pic attached. i have neon tetras and serpha tetras but they dont nip for some reason.they have survived my newbie mistakes. Almost all tetras get 2 inches max, just have plants and good water conditions and you should be fine. I have salt in my tank from the directions on the salt box for freshwater and they react just fine.

I test my tank weekly and change the water every 3 weeks unless i see soemthingin tehe tests then i water change then. Making sure to dechlorinate the water your adding. aquasafe or something.

What kind of tank do you have? what filtration and how often do you do water changes, ect?

I find tetras to be easy to keep, so im looking forward to seeing what kind of setup you have and what your doing.

it's a 5.5gallon moderately planted tank. I know 5.5 gallons isnt enough for 6 tetras so I'll be changing 30-50% of the water every other day. It's one of the penguin filters.

edit: yea that's the fish i have! they're all sitting around in a plant at the moment.
