View Full Version : Do your fish have names?

I'm trying to decide whether or not to name my new angel. It seems only right to give it a name, yet not quite right that I don't name the other 18 fish in my tank (who, with the exception of the otos, I'd never be able to tell apart)...

So.. do you name your fish?

If so, what are they called?

I name my distinctive fish. I keep mostly guppies by coloration in separate tanks, so it's a little pointless for me to name them, but everything else in my tanks gets a name. My names are also movie themed. I have:
Randal, the indestructible ADF
Dante, the Apple Snail
Loki, the Japanese Trapdoor Snail
Banky, Holden, and Bartleby, the baby Japanese Trapdoor Snails
Kevin, the Dwarf Gourami

Dalmatian Molly- Precious (named after my dalmatian we had to put to sleep last year :( )
Platy- Luigi
Swordtail- Shredder
Neon- Tony Two Fins
Neon- Tommy Two Fins

Bronze Cory- Cory
Bronze Cory- Dory
Black Molly- Daz

I haven't gotten around to naming the rest of them yet.

I have to try to remember their names.
Dwarf Gourami - George
Dojo Loach - Spot
Bloodfin Tetras(6)- Bloodhound Gang
gf's Betta - Jaws
albino catfish - Mikey - because he eats everything
Kenyi - Tiger
Red Zebra - Zeus
yellow lab - Elektra
albino soco - Damien
8 amano shrimp - Army of Darkness
Crayfish - Wolverine
"Stone Catfish" - Tiny Tim
Dwarf Puffers - Doc, Sleepy, Grumpy, Happy although I can't tell them apart.
The rest of the fish I can't tell apart from each other so they are called various names like "that one", "this one here" etc.

Now, who here names their actual tanks?

I tried to name the fish, but there got to be too many. Our Pacu has always been "The Pacu" (sort of like The Donald). Now that we have the 2nd Pacu, it's The Big Pacu and The Little Pacu. Here are the rest...
Tiger Shovelnose - Ed Degner (after an old boss)
Iridescent Shark - Sharky
Tilapia - Whitey
2 Sailfin Plecostamus - Charlie & Emilio
Common Pleco - Mark Spitz
Cobalt Zebra - Big Boss Man
Cobalt Zebra - Crabby Guy (Boss Man's son)
4 Tin Foil Barbs - The Posse
Black Arrowana - Zelda
All other Africans/Catfish - that green guy, the brown guy, the OB, etc etc etc....

I call one of my Angel fishes Nemo. The ******* jumped out of the tank and was on my carpet for who knows how long. I threw him back in the tank and he's alive and kickin!

My son names a few of them. I call all of the Coryadoras "Snuffles" as they like the snuffle around in the sand for food. The two male Endler's x Guppies I inherited were named when I got them.

I try to name all my fish, but having over 100 makes it difficult :) I still have my original Blackskirts - 4 of them named Bill, Bob, Tom, and Jim, and a Whiteskirt named Milky
Our pl*co we just gave away was named d*mmit because we couldn't find him when we first got him and said "Where are you, d*mmit?" :) Now I mainly just name my bettas. My all-time fav betta was named squishy, she produced some nice babies that are still alive today (and some I still have) The names of the ones I still have are Flare, Squish Jr, Sneaky, and their Dads name was Cherrybomb. I also have/had bettas named Pearl, Ivory, Sunset, Butters, Hottamale, Fifi (hehe), Rajah, Al, Boozey (who I rescued from a wedding when someone dumped wine into his bowl, hes still alive though!), Creamsicle, Prickles, Larry, and the list goes onnnn and onnnn... lol I'm still missing tons of names. I've noticed once I name them, I get even more attached!

I call my Yo Yo's Zoidberg fish when i try to explain to my friends about the proby antenea things they use to dig through the gravel for food.

Ironically, I had a dream where I looked at my angel fish and he was larger than normal, and he could fly (outside of the tank) and he wanted me to call him matthew. or Merkew, Matthew is easier, but its written Merkew. We played Cards all night and watched tv....Yah im a nutcase.

I've got a white angel with a black mark that looks very much like a beard. He's acted like a fuddy-duddy old man since he was a wee thing, and definitely thinks he's the boss (though he's not) - I call him The King of Town.

I described the first Platy fry ever born in the tank as 'a grain of rice with two specs of pepper on it' (the eyes) to a friend. The name Pepper seems to have stuck.

My husband calls the bristlenose ThatPlecoFish, as in 'Honey, thatplecofish is stuck to the glass, is he okay?' :D

The cherry barbs in my 10g are simply 'the girls'.

The fantail goldfish I had in university was named 'Fluffy' :D

My son names a few of them. I call all of the Coryadoras "Snuffles" as they like the snuffle around in the sand for food. The two male Endler's x Guppies I inherited were named when I got them.

We named our coryadora ..................... Cory!

Little lack of imagination there!

My son Charlie (who's two) names all his fish
They all are named Charlie with a different ending.
Here are some examples:
Betta - Charlie fishy
Red tail shark -Charlie shark

In his 20 gallon salt tank
Ocellaris clowns - Charlie nemos (there's two)
Green Chromis - Charlie green fishies (also tow)
Harlequin bass - Charlie boo-boo fishy

Myself however am too much a believer in bad karma. Not one of my fish in
any of my 9 tanks are named. You name a fish and it is going to die. BAD KARMA! Charlie shark does live in one of the tanks though, but he's not my fish so it doesn't count.

Blue Crayfish - "Nixon"
Kenyi Cichlid - "The Cichlid"
Guppys -

Bamboo Shrimp - "Silly Shrimp"

The rest just get called "that fish"

My four year old has named all our fish, mostly by type of fish:
black phantom tetras are "Zippy"
platies are all called "Bubbles" (except the one baby whose name is, of course, "baby")
bristlenose cat is "Al"
dwarf gourami is "Whiskers"
singapore shrimp is "Shrimpy"
cory cats are "Wiggles"

We also have a separate tank with two fancy goldfish. An orange one called "Dee" and our red cap oranda is "Dot". Their full names are Charlie ("Dee") and Dorothy ("Dot") but my son was about 1 1/2 years old when we got them and he couldn't say their full names, so now we even have nicknames for our fish.

I also have a mollie fry named Joaquin and a pleco named Sarge or Sargent Pleco. Those are the only fish I named because they are the ones I've had the longest.

We've only named the Bettas--

"Mr. Fish" sadly is no longer with us

"Casper" because he's black & white and leaps out of the plants at the other fish. I'm sure if he could speak he would be saying BOOOOOO!

"Lady" because she is very elegant and just seems so perfect.

The rest are just collectively referred to as "hey look at that!" or "you lot get away from that filter intake".

Only one has a name... my betta. Everyone in the house calls him "Big Pig" and apparently I am his "wench," for everytime I walk by he puffs up and makes pretty with me (no I am not the only one who feeds him). Yes I am being courted by my fish. Hubby is really not sure what to think, I have seen him eyeing the frying pan though mumbling something about steamed rice and veggies on the side... ;)

I don't really name my fish, per se, but refer to them with names like "Lady Wag Platy", "Mr. Betta", and "Prof. Guppy". Since I have three red spotted platies, I specify them by their temperments-- "Mr. ***hole Red Spotted Platy" is the bully that chases everyone else around, for example. I also have one platy fry that is called the "Mini Platy", and so it shall likely be named for the rest of its life, even when its no longer mini.

All of the ghost shrimp go by "Shrimpy".

Really, the only one who has a name is our false SAE (False Siamensis), and they are multiple names referring to his girth. He is like a hot dog with fins. I think we'll stick w/ "Hot Dog."

Betta fish definetly deserve names- there is always a soap opera.... ;)

I have two betta (my third one Oswald recently died)

Leonard I've had for a year, he used to be a sass but now he is just an old man. Maybe it's because he is sick...

Clark is my other fish. He is fiery red and a pain in the ***. I took a picture of him yesterday and he JUMPED OUT of his tank at me because he was so mad!!! (i didn't use a flash!) And poor leonard is always getting attacked (from a separate tank of course) by him. hahaha

For leonard i'm using the gel tek tetracycline for his fin rot. Has anyone ever used this? The bottle says to use it for three days, but online they say to use it 7-10 and soak his food in it. hmmm.....
