OK guys yet another post by me, the noobie.

Im trying to get my big tank "green water" gone, and I have this small 10gallon tank sitting next to me. What would you all do with a 10 gallon tank? I need some ideas, I really want to have live plants. I cant decide on rock or sand or the fish. So give me some ideas guys. I know its not big but I wanna make it look good :)

TIA
Dustin

I'm currently in the process of setting up a planted 10gal myself. Here's what I have so far: 100% Flourite substrate, 30 Watt Flourescent, Hagen CO2 injector. This will be my first planted aquarium so when I asked for advice the plants that were suggested to me are Anubias Nana (mid range), Wisteria (background), and Glosso or Micranthemoides to cover the floor. Of course there will be a nice piece of knarly driftwood sticking out in the middle. As for the fish I'm considering a mix of Platies and Mollies or an assortment of Fancy Guppies. Haven't really decided.. still a few months away since it is far too cold yet to ship plants and fish to Wisconsin. :)

Sand substrate and some dwarf puffers. I find myself just watching my puffer tank for long periods of time since the little guys are so interesting.

I have been doign some reading about those little guys and I think I want some. What other fish would you include with them? I like tirger barbs (which seem acceptable)

personally i think a 10 gallon would be great to set up a paludarium. :o

I know what I would do with an empty 10 gallon: leave it empty and save it for a quarantine tank. Buy an air pump, some plastic plants and a few small flower pots the fish can use to hide, make a sponge filter and put a sponge in my main tank to develop a bacterial colony and then wait until I needed it.

If I already had a q-tank then I think the dwarf puffer idea is neat. How well do they do in a 10 gallon? I've also heard that pygmy cory cats are amazingly fun to watch. you could fit 5 into a 10 gallon pretty comfortably, I think.

From what I've read the recommendation is 2.5-3 gallons per fish and you should provide them with plenty of cover to minimize their aggression towards each other. I currently have 4 of them in a 20 long. So far their only tanks mates are 2 freshwater flounders which I added about a week ago. There have been zero problems that I have noticed between any of the fish. The only problems are experienced by the snails that I drop in the tank every few days. I feed them frozen bloodworms twice a week and that's a treat to watch.

Changing Tanks

I am getting a 30 galloon tank that was used for a salt water tank, can I use this tank as a fresh water tank ? Thanks Doug

Yes. Rinse it thoroughly. If you really want to disinfect it you can use bleach or Oxy-Clean. If you use Bleach, be sure to rinse it very well and it couldn't hurt to use the last rinse with some water you shot some dechlorinator in.
