Hi, my black tetra (black skirt tetra) has a whole in the middle of its top fin, its been like this for around 2 or so weeks, and theres a smalll tetra in the with him that sometimes nips at him, the only one they bother is each other, but there been no harm like missing sclaes or exposed flesh. Any input would be great, thank you.

Any injury should be a sign of incompatibility, IMO.

Normally, good water conditions is enough to allow the fish to heal. But, since this has persisted for 2 weeks, that indicates that either the ongoing nature of the harrassment is stressing the fish too much, or that possibly a bacteria has already taken hold. I'd remove the afflicted fish and put it in quarantine. Do daily water changes, and if there's no sign of improvement within 3-4 days, or if it gets worse, start looking for a good antibiotic--Maracyn would be my first choice.

OK I will do that, Hes swimming fine, and now the hole seems to be only about the size of the tip of a ball point pen. so it seems to have shrunk. I'll watch it further and more closely I dont want to quarintine it unless it really needs to be quarintined, to prevent stress. the nipping usually happens at feeding time.

Thank you. if all else fails i'll pick up some antibiotic.
