Is it simple to tell the difference between fin rot and just nipped fins? Or can they be very similar in certain circumstances? What causes fin rot? Whats the best cure for it?

yeah with fin rot the fins will rot back to the base of the fin quickly - it won't look like nips or tears usually - it's weird the tail just rots off it is curable and fins grow back quickly but if the infection gets to the base of the tail or spinal area the fin might never come back - treat with melafix it's worked well for me
I have read about the many beneficial effects of adding salt to the water, but is table/cooking salt ok? or does it have to be crystalised salt or something from the lfs?
