View Full Version : mail order plants in winter
Understanding that most mail order places ship plants 2-day, how are they shipped in general and how do they fare in the cold during transit? In New England, it's near 0 F at night and the highs aren't getting above 20 F, if that. I wouldn't even dream of ordering livestock before April...

Plants actually ship better in colder temps, if it below freezing I would recommend the use of a styro box with a heat pack they should be fine.

I have had Water Sprites shipped from Florida and Anubias from Louisana in the last 3 weeks. I live in Pennsylvania - and in particular, the days the Anubias were shipped, it was about 15 degrees out during the day. they all arrived safely no problems.
they weren't even sent in a styrofoam container - and no heatpack. Instead, they were in plastic bags with a little water (one had wet neswpaper wrapped around them in the bag itself), the bag was wrapped a bit in dry newspaper - and then this all went in a USPS Priority mail cardboard box.
now I was home to get them as the postman delivered them. You need to be there - can't have him just leave them outside when it is that cold.
BTW - the Anubias Nana and Coffeeolia were great plants - far bigger (12 leaves plus a baby plant on each one I bought growing) than my LFS ever would carry - for less cost

Contact 'Lotsoffish' at 'PMang@webtv.net' but go to Aquabid first and check out his plants and also be sure to read the feedback he receives.

Ger1023 - Before buying from ebay, I suggest you go to Aquabid and look over the plants people are selling there. IMO, much better quality / prices.
Besides some hobbyists offering good deals on some of their extra stuff, there are a group of pretty highly regarded "store" sellers (for lack of a better term). Check out their feedback and you will see. I have had personal experience buying on Aquabid from Toyin at http://www.rehobothaquatics.com/index2.html - I was very pleased (he is the one I got the very large 12+ leaved Anubias Nana's from for less than the price of a 3 to 5 leave plant). I have also seen the person Z-Man referred to - Lotsoffish and the pics of his plants - they also look very, very nice.
Just my opinion, but I think you can do better on Aquabid for fish / plants than on ebay
