My girlfriend just set up an aquarium with a convict cichlid and we were wondering what the chances are that it would get along with a (female) betta and some african dwarf frogs?

oh no, the convict would love to nip the fins and he would pick the limbs from the fogs. Convicts are nasty lil buggers, even though they are so cute in the stores, once they establish territory they get quite nasty, especially when breeding. You could get another convict and hope they will pair up! To read more about cichlids check some of these links:

More peaceful fish for the ADF are neon tetras, livebearers such as mollies and guppies and bottom dwelling corydoras which come in many color variations and are very fun to watch(one of my favorites!)
Good Luck

also, what size tank do you have. I think a pair of convicts would need a BARE minimum of 20 to survive and that's probably too small. Large Pleco's and larger cichlids are about the only tankmates for convicts and that's IF you have a big enough tank in the first place. KYle

During breeding time in my friends 40 gallon we witnessed the deaths of 2 smaller convicts, a flying fox and a barb. Convicts can get to be pretty mean.

the tank is too small but its larger than what he was stuck in. He was in a 'goldfish bowl' with no filtration and has lived there for about a year since he did not get along with anything else she tried to put him in a tank with.

if you (or she) had a 29 gallon that would be perfect to get a couple more cons and see if two paired up.Of course, then you would have to find homes for the babies and it can get overwhelming. A single con does best in at least a 20 like stated above.

her mom has a 29 g but its stocked with guppies, platies, a kissing gourami and a small plecto.

I have two convicts in a 29 gallon along with three senegal bichirs, seven red eye tetras, four black neons, two plecos and two cats, a hoplo and a suncat with zero problems.

How long has this tank been setup? Don't senegals get 13-14 inches? Shouldn't be to long before the convicts decide the black neons are yummy snacky cakes. You mean suncat as in Asian Sun catfish? They get 17 inches long. Sounds like your overstocked and zero problems means you haven't given it enough time yet to see the problems.
