I was wondering if anyone could recomend some type of night lighting. I'd like to be able to observe things once the tank lights are off for the night but I am not sure about the best way of going at it.

I notice some of the pet stores use black lighting. Can you use those bulbs all day in place of a regular floresent? I have seen some other kits available as well as DIY but I am not sure how to integrate them into my tank much less if I have the skill to do it. I have the Walmart 55G and ideally would like to buy something I can snap right in so to speak.

Any ideas?

If you do a search for moon light in the DIY section you should get some hits on pretty easy methods for night lights. There are some automotive accessorie lights that work great for that.

Some animals (like coral) need periods of moonlight to initiate spawning.

In a freshwater aquarium the moonlights are primarily for observing your nocturnal specimens, as far as I know.

what are the benifites of night lighting, should we do it, would the natural from out side (my tank is near a window) be enouph.

Its really only for you. Its just to be able to see the fish once the main lighting is off. I like to be able to see the movement in the tank once the lights in the tank/room are off.

I tried some LED lights but they seemed too focused/bright to pass as moonlight. I now use an ordinary blue spot light bulb mounted high and at an angle. It is too dim to take a decent pic of, but it looks realy close to moonlight. I can see everything going on in the tank with the room lights on or off. Plus it was only a few bucks!

I have three blue leds mounted in my hood and its the neatest thing since sliced bread. I find myself watching my tank more with the main lights off than when they are on. Watching the plants sway in the current which causes the light to flicker off the bottom is really nice.

I agree on that. If I get around to it I'll try to reset mine so they are higher up off the lid and maybe directed at the reflector. The three led 'beams can be sort of harsh.
