Hi,
I am trying to cycle a new 29g tank. I added Ammonia Hydrochloride
(10% contration) to the tank. I think I added 10ml, which appears to be too much. The reading right after adding the Ammonia was 7.5ppm (my test kits only goes up to 7.5). I have tested it every night since and it still reads 7.5ppm, 6 days later. The nitrite levels have been 0.05ppm for the last 3 days.

Shouldn't the Ammonia levels have started to fall by now? Does anyone think I need to do a large water change and start over?

Thanks in advance
Graham

Did you seed with anything from an established tank? Try taking a sample out and diluting it (ie, start with one cup from the tank, add one cup, test, repeat as needed til the test can read a value instead of just giving your max) to determine what the concentration in the tank is at right now. With no seeding, it can take 2-3 weeks for the bacteria to establish.

Doing water changes to get your ammonia back to the 3-5ppm range would be a good idea at this point and definitely won't hurt anything. You want to monitor your ammonia daily and only add ammonia as needed to get back into that 3-5ppm range. Once the ammonia consuming bacteria get going, you'll be adding ammonia every day until the cycle completes to keep it in that range.

As OG said, without seeding from another tank it can take awhile before you'll start seeing a drop in your ammonia. Don't get discouraged though, it will happen in time! Once things start happening, it goes rather quickly (although it can seem like forever for the nitrItes to finally go away! hehe)

If you have access to an established tank (another of your own, from LFS or from a friend), it would definitely be helpful to get a squeezing from their filter media or a handful of gravel to add to your tank. If you go with the gravel route and theirs doesn't match yours, you can put it in a mesh or nylon bag (pantyhose work great!) and just put it in your tank.
