Brown algae?

I have a 30 gallon tank with a UGF. All the rocks and plants in it are now covered in a layer of something brown. Is this algae? How do I get rid of it? At first I wiped off some of the junk but it just comes back. Help and thanks.

How long has it been running? I haven't got an UGF, but did have lots of brown stuff which may or may not have been algae, until the tank was about 4 weeks old. I think mine was caused by a poorly plant that was slowly dying in the corner. After i took that out it went away. The added 15ml StressZyme may have helped too.

Sorry can't be more help.

Yeah, that's definitely algae. If you don't have any plants, then don't leave the lights on for too long. Otherwise get some fish that'll eat it up. I recommend some Ottos .. they love the stuff and are very easy to take care of.

But if it is a new tank, and if you can stand it (big if there I know), ignore it for a few weeks and see if recedes as the tank matures. Many "young tanks" develop diatom films all over the place, and in the majority, but not all, much of the diatom/brown algae will fade as the tank matures. If your water supply has high silicate levels, you may be one of the folks where the stuff hangs on - your utility will know whether your silicates levels are high or not, call and ask.

I set it up about a month and a half ago. I've had fish in it for about three weeks. I've been having this algae for about a week and a half now and it's only getting thicker. Ottos as in otocinclus? I only have the light on during the day but maybe I should leave it off more.

I actually heard that most fish won't eat the brown algae.. I may be wrong! I have the same problem and am hoping it is due to the new tank, (upgrade from 35 to 60 I should say), that is what I have heard most brown algae is from, but I never had it with other new tanks?!?!? Maybe snails???

I had brown algae in my new aquarium at about the same timeframe that you mentioned. You can get some oto's, they do eat it. My bristlenose ate it also, but not like the oto does.

For what it's worth, light has nothing to do with brown algae growth. Get some oto's and clean the glass with a scraper for a while and it eventually goes away.

Thanks guys

I just joined up today because I specially have this problem. I have only had my 55 gallon the aquarium set up since December 27th and thought Although I live in hard water hell I thought I was doing every thing right I researched, I cycled, I tested (hard water yes, but nominal readings on everything else) I’m slowly adding fish, (Currently I have 12 or roughly 23 inches of fish so far/ and mostly tetras) Also I change out 10% every week and plan to do 30-50% once a month there has only been one of these so far. And yet suddenly as if over night the aquariums darken with brown algae lots of it...all over the glass, the plastic plants and the substrate. (A mix of old gravel from my last aquarium, and new gravel)

The only that I did that seemed to coincide with the breakout was finally getting around to adding the second of two lighting fixtures that came with the tank. Fearing that this may have been the culprit I now have the lights on a timer but each time I look it appears the break-out looks worse.

After reading this thread I am now considering algae eaters but I am open to any other methods of algae abatement.

Thanks again

Dori
