African cichlid compatability question

I assume that you are using the term "African cichlids" to describe the sub-group of Africans that come from the Rift Lakes, as opposed to the group that comes from West Africa (a very different area).
In both cases, however, the answer is "not really". Monos are brackish or even saltwater fishes, whereas the Rift Lake cichlids come from water that is hard, but not salty in the sodium chloride sense. And West African cichlids tend to come from soft, acidic fresh water.
