I have a 55 gal glass tank, thats 4 ft long. I want to put it on top of my dresser but my dresser is only 3 ft wide. Is it a good idea to have the tank stick out 6 inches on each side? Thanks

No it won't be ok................

First I doubt your dresser will hold the tank........You always should have a real tank stand...........Think about this the water alone in that tank will be about 500 lbs (will your dresser hold this??) Plus decorations and gravel.....You could be looking at almost 600 lbs.

Get youself a tank stand.

having your tank sticking out off the dresser will put more pressure on the glass bottom of your tank making it more susceptible to cracks.

And don't forget that tanks don't actually rest on the bottom piece of glass, but on the plastic lip around the edge. The corners take a lot of pressure.

I think supporting it on the middle is also not a good idea...however, I have my 55g on cynder blocks that support it on the ends. There is 2feet that is unsupported in the middle of the tank. As long as its glass that way is ok IMO, because glass has a VERY high resistance to bowing..and thats the forces it will be under, not impact forces.

just my opinion though.

The average 55, once it is filled with water, gravel and decor etc., will weigh upwards of 600 to 650 lbs. That tank would shatter before it was half full.

Looks like I'm going shopping for a stand then, thanks!

Glass has a great ability to resist bowing, it just isnt that good with sharp impacts.

My Oceanic 55g tank has been setup like this then moved to a new house and setup the same, its been like that for a good while now. It can be done, as long as enough of the tank is supported, it spreads the weight and can still be ok. Im not telling anyone to do it, just my results. but to answer your question, no I wouldnt put it on your dresser.
