Do you need to add salt with Africans

I dont add salt to my tanks, but many people do. Its up to you. Salt is good for preventing bacterial infections on nipped fins and the like, so its good to add it. It doesnt bother the fish in small doses. 
There is little or no sodium chloride in Lake Malawi, why would you want to add something they never met in the wild?

Various companies make and African Cichlid "Salt" that you can put in your tank that will (supposedly) recreate the water conditions found in the rift lakes of Africa. Your best (and cheapest) bet is to used one of the African Cichlid substrates that will buffer the Ph and keep the water hard.
