View Full Version : So I did some research...
And I'm very interested in the Contortionist Val, Cyperus helferi, dwarf hairgrass, dwarf sag, giant bacopa, Ricca (tie it down), and Willow moss.
(This is for the 90Gal with 260 watts)
Now I have some questions on the maintenance of these plants.
1. Is it possible to trim/prune these plants?
2. Do any of these get out of control?
3. Will any of these be dominant and possibly kill other plants?
4. Will any of these not be suitable for my tank?
Answers to these questions and any other words of advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

No one knows the answer to these questions? I find that hard to believe :) :p

Let's see...
1) Yes, you're going to wind up trimming the Val, the bacopa and the riccia. You'll need to eventually thin out the Dsag and the willow moss when they outgrow their boundaries.
2) You bet. Vals grow like crazy in the right conditions, you'll need to keep an eye out for it.
3) No, you should be good, but ricci might overgrow some of the lower-level plants. If you keep it trimmed, this shouldn't be a problem.
4) The moss and the Dsag are really considered medium-light plants, so 2.8 WPG might be too much, maybe. This is a hard question to answer because we don't know much about your tank (pH, kH, nitrAtes, dosing schedule, etc.). If you provide more info, it'll be easier to determine what's going to work and what won't. Haveyou been to PlantGeek.Net? They have a great section on what plants do well in different light densities.

Thank you for the reply!
The tank is not setup yet, these are just plants I like the look of and would be interested in when the tank is ready for them. We just got the overflow yesterday, but once that is completed we will start getting the tank going. (We, obviously, wont be adding these plants right away). And yes, I have been to PlantGeek.net, it's where I saw these plants. Are any of these plants so demanding that I'll be pulling my hair out? :p Thanks again!

If you're using a trickle filter/overflow/wet-dry filter, you may have issues with the CO2... I know I did when I was still using a wet-dry.
Looks to me like the Val is the only thing that will keep you hoppin', they grow very quickly.
Yeah that whole thing with the wet/dry and CO2 are up to my B/F. He said he has a way to make it work out but its too complicated for me to understand :p so I'll leave it to him.
Thank you again Timmain! :)

NP, if he has troubles keeping enough CO2 in the water, let me know. There are ways to make it work.
