I have a quick and rather easy question that just needs a simple clarification. What is the difference between brackish water and regular saltwater or more simply put what composes and defines brackish water?

well brackish water is fresh and salt mixed(kind of). Salt water has a higher SG(specific gravity). It is also composed of many more organisms(SW). Saltwater also has more vibrant colors and more needs. Brackish is a mix of both worlds. Less fish for brackish though. That's basically all I know. I hope I answered your question.

Ok so you have lowland's where a lake meets with the ocean. The fresh water lake mixes with the ocean. Brackwater. Go closer to the ocean the SG/Salinity will get higher, As you move inland the SG/Salnity will drop until you get to pure fresh water. The scale starts at 0.000 for freshwater and moves up to about 0.024 for marine. pretty much anything from 0.001 to 0.021 is considered brack

Brackish water is not less diverse than marine conditions. There are fewer of these animals for aquariums, but the brackish zones are amazingly complex. One of the larger issues is that brackish waters are nurseries for many animals--the adults come in to lay eggs, and the juvenile fish stay there for a brief time before migrating to full salinity. It's tough to meet the needs of these animals in the home aquarium, and many die due to being kept in the wrong conditions, or in the right conditions for too long.
But, the best definition for brackish: marine water diluted by freshwater. Brackish water contains the same trace elements as marine water, just in lower concentrations.
Another example is the Archer fish, actually born in fresh water and as a juvenile should be housed in fresh water, put unless it is gradually introduced to brackish its growth will be stunted and it will die premeturely. So Brackish is a pretty tricky option.

Thanks for all of ya'lls help. My question has been answered and I now know that much more about this vast and interesting universe of marine fish.
