Hello everyone. I have my 55 setup (going FO to start with since I'm new.) I have substrate added and almost full of water (RO). I have one power head running (200gph) and i'm going to get another soon. Do you run with the ventury open or closed? At first I had it opened but the little bubbles were all over everything so I closed it off.

Still waiting on my protein skimmer to come. I'm currently running my power filter to clear the water. It was super milky from the aragonite sand and has cleared up super since running the filter. I was planning to leave the power filter running without the filter media in it for additional water movement. I was also planning on leaving the bio sponges in it. Will this be OK?

After I get my water params right, what is my logical next step? Live rock? or do I throw in the shrimp now? and wait for the live rock?

A friend of mine (who btw used to do SW a few years ago) told me that when he was doing it, you started your cycle by adding about 6 live mollys.

LFG says to get some partially cured rock and put it in. I will say that the rocks (tonga and fiji) he has in his vats are awesome and breeming full of life.

Just trying to get all of the advice that I can from all sources that I can.

Thanks

Yes, having the sponges in there willbe okay--but you'll have to check to be sure it's not trapping lots of solids and contributing nitrates.

I would put the shrimp in. The bacteria colonies will beging developing, and once the ammonia has gone to 0, you will be able to add the live rock without killing the encrusting life.

Yes, most aquariums, fresh and salt, used to be cycled with fish. But--since the same thing can be accomplished without killing or injuring any fish, why would you want to?
