angels

ok, ive had 2 small angels in a comnity tank for aboout a week, and now they are acting funny, one just sits near the top, looks like it always feding, and comes down, swims around for 2 seconds, and then goes back to the top, the ohter one seems to be swimming a bit better, but, its bottom fins seem to be arching back, almost looks like it has elbows, both fish seem to be moving with the current of the water when they are sitting there. the only other agreessive fih i have in there are jellybean tetras (or popsicle tetras) i owned one angelfish before, and it was from a bad stock, died the day it got home, along with all the stock at the fish store, but, before it died, it semed to have the "elbows" and the tail fin, seemed to have "shrunk" but as of now, neither of the current angels have that prblem. as of now, the angel wiht the "elbows" still eats, but the other angel doesnt. any suggestionns?

Its always best to provide as many details of your setup as you can. Water parameters, tank size, temp., a list of other fish, filtration etc. The more info the better the chance that somebody can help you.

well, the black angel ended up dying today. but the other angel seems to be doing better.

I am having almost the exact same problem. I brought home 3 (young) veil tail angels two weeks ago. Brought the fish home, they did fine for a day or two. After that one of the angels started hanging out in the corner of the tank at the surface, then died a couple of days later. I was concerned and took some water into the LFS to be tested. They suggested I lower my ph with a softening pillow. (it had tested at 7.6, but previously held steady at 7.2) I understand that Angels generally like a lower ph. I'm back down to 7.2 after the pillow, but lost another angel yesterday, and today I'm noticing my third angel hanging out in the corner at the water surface. Everything else tested absolutely perfect.

I'm very concerned and don't want to be killing fish. I am terrified that my fish is suffering in some way, but if they're eating when you feed and swimming around, how can you tell?

BTW- my 5 original Zebra Danios are healthy, active and show no signs of slowing down.

Kelly, how big were the angels when you got them. Not including the fins were they the size of a dime? A quarter? Sometimes very small angels have a high mortality rate. A Ph of 7.6 is fine for angels btw. What temp are you keeping them at?

I had the same problem i bought an angel frm a chain and the next day i discovered it had swimmbladder disease so i went to buy treatment so i put it in and about 30 mins later it wiz dead at the bottom of the tank

I would say the angels were between the size of a nickel and a quarter (without the long fins). They've all died by the way. I lost the last one finally a day or two after i posted that message. Very sad and very dissapointing. I have no idea what happened and my LFS didn't have any idea either since my water tested perfect. I keep my tank at 79 degrees Farenheit.

Not to be overly didactic, but almost always when angels die in this fashion there is a water quality problem at the root of the situation. And by water quality I don't mean pH. With rare exceptions, pH, GH, and KH are almost never the source of the difficulty.

Since no one involved in this thread provided significant details of their setup, it is impossible to diagnose the exact cause of the deaths, but everyone involved would be well advised to purchase a general purpose test kit (Tetra makes one that retails online for about $15) and to start testing GH, KH, pH, ammonia, and nitrItes immediately.

Additional information on these and related subjects can be found online. One of many excellent resources is www.skepticalaquarist.com.
