Fluval 304/404-standard media mix?

Hello folks,

I've been using a Fluval 304 for a few years now and it occurs to me that I've never really come across a standard list of filter media to use, that would change only when something chemically needed adjusting.

I've been winging it and using the typical media that folks cite in their filteration. However, I noticed last night that 2 of my media when combined, can remove medications and/or water treatments.

Could anyone who uses a Fluval and sticks to a regular media system possibly share that list?

Thanks in advance
Kelly

uppin....

I have a 404 and for the past 4 or so years have been using these things made by fluval, they look like ceramic tube things-I forget what their called. I have those in two of the compartments and I have some some sponges stuffed into the other two. That along with the tall sponges that came with it on the intake side.

JIB -- i bought a Fuval 404, it comes with 2 tall sponges, white rings and A carbon,
i am planning to use really fine foam instead of activated carbon to polish the water.
is it O.k. to do that or will the fine foam get dirty to quick and clog my filter..

The great thing about fluvals is that you can use anything in them...no rules!
If you use finer floss or similar materials, use them in the lower baskets to keep them from getting into the impeller...use charcoal when you want to get rid of meds or clarify the water...you don't need to use charcoal all the time.

I've never used the carbon, the sponges that i have in the baskets are actually sponges i pulled out of established filters hoping to get a jump start on my cycling, then i just never pulled back out. Cannisters are good for bio filtration, so using things with lots of surface area(places for bacteria to grow) will be beneficial.

I just did my regular water change and filter maintenance and thought I would try this for a change.............

Run a Fluval 304
1. I rinse the foams out with tank water (really well)
2. I always had carbon in the bottom, but this time I pulled it out and packed in some polyester floss (I'll see how the water ends up within the next few days)
3. The middle basket is bio rings (rinsed with tank water)
4. The top basket runs Ammonia remover and Nitra Zorb.

This has always worked great for me (other than never had the floss before) my tank looks great and the readings are great also.
