I disagree. Adding ammonia to a planted tank, especially a non-established planted tank, runs a high risk of massive algae outbreak.
Is this because a planted tank has more algae spores in it than a nonplanted tank or at least more algae per volume (carried in on the plants)?
I dont know if this matters... but I have atleast 30 snails in this tank... not intentionally... I got a bag full of gravel from an astablished tank at the lfs and "poof" I had snails and hydra. The hydra didnt make it through my first amonia overdose (8ppm or higher) but the snails are thriving at first there were only a dozen or so and they were no bigger than >>>> O <<<< than zero, but now there are several that are eraser size... they are pretty active and a lot faster than I thought theyd be... anyway... that is off subject.
I went to the store and was given two plants for free... i assume it was becasue I ordered all my fish and they want to keep my business...

Couldn't he just stop with the ammonia and plant a couple of days later and be alright? I see what you're saying tho, RTR... makes sense.
I confess that I have done it and got away with it, but not since I've seen all the posts from other who tried it and got algae heaven.
Just want to be sure I understand....if you want plants and fish...you cycle the tank, then add plants and then add fish?
Yes, that is safest option for single-tank setup. The plants can adapt and adjust to the tank with the fish present more easily than you can clear an algae outbreak.
