In relation to the other thread........how old are you, and how many years have you kept aquariums?

Myself, I started fishkeeping at the age of 8. I stopped for awhile at the age of 15, and just took it up again a year ago.

I'm 26

I'm 30... The earliest tank I can remember caring for was a 20 gal long full of guppies and itty bitty snails when I was about 10. One of the weekly chores that my brother, sister and I would have as kids was that we each had to crush 10 snails in the tank so the fish could eat their bodies... It was my Mom's method of snail control! And every week, my sister would barter with my brother and me for who would crush her snails in exchange for a different chore.. She could not bring herself to stick her hand in the tank, much less crush a snail... Oh the concerns of childhood! ;)

I still have that 20g long in my basement, empty, right now! Since then, I cannot remember a time that I've never had a tank running. Whether it was a tiny 2 or 3 gallon on my desk at my first "real" job, or my 5.5 gallon, a 10 gallon or a 29 gallon.... Almost always with small fish, guppies, tetras, neons, dwarf frogs, bettas...

My 125g that I got for Christmas is my biggest tank ever. It's also the very first time that i've kept most of the kinds of fish that are in there!

I LOVE IT!!! :dance

Born in '74, started keeping fish as a pre-schooler with my Dad who kept guppies and bred Discus - I remember the awe I felt when he would actually let me feed the guppies. :) My first personal tank was a 10 gal at the age of 10. I'm running a 15tall with guppies but I have a 33 long ready to set up as an open top "water garden" with fish sometime soon.

My platy died of swim bladder disease and my molly was sick for weeks and i put her to sleep. So I go to put my 2 neons in the big tank with the blood parrot eventhough I knew I shouldnt. I took my chances and did it anyways because I wanted to change the gravel in the 5 gallon and HE ATE THEM!!!!!!!! :sad :sad :sad :sad I tried to save them but I couldn't and it was all my fault. I shouldn't have done it. I have killed so many of my fish :sad I cant take it anymore because I love all animals so much and even my fish like they were my children. I couldn't take the sickness, worrying, and dying anymore. Now I am very depressed and haveing a very bad day because I miss them so much already. The worst part is not knowing the practices of the person who took them eventhough I know she probably will take good care of them, but I don't really trust anyone to take care of them as well as I would have :sad

Aww that's too bad... It's all part of the learning experience though. I have been keeping fish steadily for a few years now and have wanted to quit a few times. Everytime a fish dies, either from sickness or age, or some stupid mistake I made, I feel absolutely horrible. Maybe you should take a break from it and try again in a few months, or years, or whenever you feel comfortable. Cheer up though :) I'm sure the person you gave the fish to will know how to care for them.

Born Aug.19/58. First had a ‘goldfish bowl’ :( of guppies when I was 10 &11. Set up my first tank when I was 16 and have had fish ever since. For a couple years after my son was born, the tank was awfully neglected.

Sorry to hear that mayree.......I know it can be frustrating when fish die despite your best efforts, but sometimes things happen that are beyond our control as fishkeepers. And everyone makes mistakes now and then! Don't beat yourself up over it or worry too much about how well your fish are doing, start researching and planning for a new (and bigger) tank! :)

Born in '58.
I've had up to 3 tanks up and running until the big kitchen remodel fiasco at our house about 3 years ago. DH and I were doing the work...planned to have done in 3 mo or so outside..we took it to the wall studs and subfloor, with lots of electrical rewiring and ripping out some walls. He developed a bulging disc in his upper back and had to put things on hold for months :(
Ended up loosing/giving away all fish because of lack of water supply to tanks. Couldn't run python from bathroom faucets as planned, and one thing after another.
But he got better...I have a beautiful kitchen and now I'm ready for my fish back.

I'm 30, and I've had fish on and off since I was five or six. My first fish was a goldfish I won and brought home (surprise mom!). My mom bought a small tank and kept it in my room for a while, then it disappeared one day - I'm guessing the goldfish died and she tore the tank down and gave it away. I must have missed having fish, because when my grandmother asked me what I wanted for my sixteenth birthday, I asked for an aquarium. She bought me a 35g setup, and I started killing fish left, right and centre. Gradually I learned how to keep them properly, and started going out with a boy who loved fish - a recipe for MTS! I filled my room with tanks, went a little crazy for a while. When I went to university I had to downsize to a 10g, which curtailed things and left my parents with a house full of empty tanks! Now I've got two tanks and it's enough to keep me very busy.
I still have MTS but I go to meetings regularly and manage to keep it under control ;)

Thought this was a good place for my first post. Hi, everyone!

I'm 23, soon to be 24 - yay Year of the Rooster!! My first aquarium was a 10 gallon nightlight with some awfully unfortunate fish including a goldfish, a pleco, and far too many mollies when I was about 5. It lasted until I was 13. I picked up the hobby again in December and have since completely revamped my thoughts on fishkeeping thanx largely to this site and its very well-informed members. I currently have 3 cycled 10 gallons, one soon to be planted.

Bought my first tank, a 29g, when I was 19 and despite knowing absolutely nothing about the hobby up until the last month (and I still have a looooooong way to go) have managed to keep my original 2 Blackskirt Tetras alive that entire time, even on a 900 mile move from Wisconsin to Alabama (unfortunately they are the only 2).

I bought a second 29g about 9 months ago and a 20g and a 10g in the last month. Hoping to have all of my fish last as long as my first 2 now.
