Is this velvet on my betta?

This poor betta has fin rot. He's had it for weeks but I just figured it out. Can't figure out what the stressor is except maybe the pH which might have been as low as 6.6 but is usually 6.8. (I have been doing weekly water changes and checking ammonia levels.)

One week, though, I overdosed the tank on 0-0-3 fertilizer for the plants. Could this have stressed the fish? (Added the start-up dose instead of the waterchange does.)

Two days ago, just after I figured out he has fin rot, he got this spot on his head. No one knows what it is. He swims quite actively, eats actively, no one seems to pick on him (in with a bushy nose pleco, neon tetras, African dwarf frogs and ghost shrimp in a 23 gallon tank).

Suspiciously, there's also a Neon Tetra we got on Thursday with a strange spot that look only vaguely like this one. He's been acting normally. No one can figure out his spot, either.

I know I should probably set up a hospital tank, but not only is that practically difficult right now, it wouldn't have cycled and I think it would stress out the fish to move them.

I started added Melafix to the tank yesterday, but see no improvement in the fin rot after 24 hours. I am wondering if I should treat with Furan-2, Furanase, Maracyn II, or Pimafix. Maybe it would help with both the fin rot and the mystery spots?

Also, do you think I should try to change the pH?

Thanks for the help!

The picture is a little too dark to actually tell what it is. As for your question about velvet, it is doubtful that it is velvet if you are not seeing any other symptoms, IMHO. Velvet will generally attack inside the gills first, which will cause your fish to gasp for air before you even see any spots. As for medication for the fin rot, I will let somebody else answer that one. I know a lot of people recommend melafix for it, but i've never really noticed that melafix does much of anything besides make the tank smell nice.

fin rot can take from a few hours up to a month to cure. fin rot on my betta took a few days to clear up but now hes happy and healthy :) be patient and keep medicating. a bit of salt can also help the healing process :)

Fungus Clear from Jungle (Tank Buddies) safe?

Now, the front fin looks horrible. All the pet stores are closed and only Wal Mart is open. All they had for fin rot was Jungles Fungus Clear (nitrofurazone, furazolidone, potassium dichromate). I am very worried about the betta. I think the pleco can wait until morning but I'm afraid to wait to act on the betta. Go with the FUngus Clear for both the pleco and the betta? Or, just the betta?

betta looks better, neon tetras look worse

Well, it's been 8 hours since I added the FUngus Clear. This morning, the betta's fins look better and he's acting normally. But, now the neon tetras look a bit dusty and two of them are no longer schooling but hiding under the wood. Also, I think the pleco may be clamping his fins a bit.

Maybe I should do a water change?

I'm no expert, but i'm pretty sure you're not suppost to mix medications. I think what's is happeneing is that you're unintentionally stressing the fish. Of course your worried about them, but the best thing is to be patient. Good luck!
