its a 200 litre tank with a 100 litre sump. its going to be fowlr, as ive only got floresent lights. there is only 15 kgs of rock in there at the moment. sorry about the units - i dont know how to convert to gallons or pounds.

If i've got my conversions right, you have:

200 litre tank = 52 gallons
100 litre sump = 26 gallons
for a total of 78 gallons

15kilo LR = 33 lbs

78 gallons of live rock, needs approx 8 lbs of live rock.... you still need close to 45lbs of live rock (or 20 kilo's)

thanks! i thought i would need another 15 kgs - but 20 kgs sounds right, the more the merier right? :dance

now ive found out how to post pics i thuought id post some more. sorry the're a bit blurry-dont know how to resize them. any comments would be good thanks. the tank has been cycling for 1 and a half weeks now. nh3 0.25, no2 3.3, no3 110. the ammonia hasnt really spicked, but the nitrite and nitrate are off the chart! im using uncured rock as the waste material rather than the shrimp method. the diatoms have started taking over the tank now, so ive been leaving the lights off, but i dont really mind the brown stuff everywhere, means things are going naturally.

the return pipe, there is another row of holes next to the showen row of holes letting water go along the back wall. the end of the pipe is also un-blocked to allow alot of water to be pushed along the bottom of the back wall......

tank was setup on the 9th of feb, its now the 28th of feb. nh3 is now 0. nitrite is down to 0.3 (down from off the chart at 3.3). still awhile to go, and im getting ants in my pants (or cleaner shrimps :p ) ive got the rest of the rock coming tomorrow (another 20kgs) which i will clean up as much as possible, but it will probably cause the tank to cycle again :thud: . the rock down here is pretty gross, uncured with lots of dead stuff hidden away inside it. anyway, better post some more pics......(not much to look at, lots of diatoms)

well i added the rest of the rock, for a total of approx 30 kg. the tank re-cycled (if thats the proper word for it) with nh3 at 0.20, n02 at 0.3 and no3 at 50. the brown algae is everywhere! has my tank got more than is normally expected? it looks gross! ive also added the macro algae to the sump/refugium. once the nitrite and ammo go down to 0, how big a water change do i do? i expect my nitrates are going to be very high, approx around 30, so a 50% water change would drop these levels down to 15? is that the way it works? heres some more pics....

sorry the photos are boring. once the cycles over and the clownfish are in, ill start thinking about protein skimmers and lighting, then i think ill try adding a few hardy mushrooms. hopefully next time i post some pics the clowns will be in their new home, and everthing will be looking better than it is at the moment.

Looks good. Things will be better once the clean up crew gets in. Since my tank has cycled I have been doing about 25 to 30 percent changes a week and have seen a slow steady drop in nitrates. Hope it helps. Good luck!

thanks.
