This is my first attempt at an aquarium.
I have a 2.5 gallon tank with one betta.
The tank came with an undergravel filter and a bubble tube. My concern is that the bubble tube creates too much current for my still-water friend.
While I don't want the current to bother him, I also like that it will keep the water cleaner.
I just want what is best for my fish!
Any suggestions?
Thanks!

Bettas can get used to much more current than what an airlift in an undergravel filter will produce. He'll be fine once he gets adjusted to his new home. ;)

I'll second Harlock's sentiment.
Although a valve will control the air volume and thus reduce currecnt, Air lift tubes really don't create a lot of current, they do give a good optical illusion though. IMHO one of the biggest Downfalls with conventional UGF is a lack of current. even when I still used conventional, I used pwerheads on mine. in a 2.5g the airlift shuld be enough, but I doubt seriously it would ever be too much.
Make sure you vaccume your gravel well !!!
