Sunny Cali!
Is live rock needed? My friend has a 35g setup with 2 regular aquarium stones about 4 lbs each and a plastic cave. With some crushed coral as substrate. His fish do fine. I personally use LR but he doesnt and they are alright. He has an Ocelloris Clown, a yellowtail damsel and a lawnmower blenny. He feeds Mysis, and Brine shrimp frozen but then thawed of course. How do you feel about LR use? Needed or un needed? I say its a deffinate neccessity.

i dont owna saltwater tank but from what i hear its necassary for filtration and for some fish to graze on

How old is your friends setup? What sort of filtration? Under gravel?

I'm about this close to starting my own marine tank (as soon as I find a good home for my cichlids) and all of my research has shown that live rock is the best way to maintain stable water conditions over the long haul. ASide from that my own preference tends towards live rock anyway simply because of the vast amounts of life found on the rock. It adds so much interest to the tank. I had a roomate once with a sixty gallon tank that must have had about 120 pounds of live rock, and I could get lost for hours just watching everything that was going on.

He has some live sand mixed with his crushed coral substrate. All he has is an ocelloris clown, a damsel and a blenny. The tank is about 5 months old now fully cycled and everything. All the fish are healthy and happy. I was just curious. Yeah I concur I use LR just because its incredible to watch and it also benefits my filtration. He doesnt do anything reeg just FO. His filtration is a Penguin 350something powerfilter and 2 other tetra powerfilters I think. I tried to replicate his filtration with my 45g because thats about all the filtration I have on it except for LR. He also has power ehads for better water movement.
