I am getting ready to set up a 29 gal community tank and was wondering what the best filter would be for it. I have read alot of good things anout Penguin Bio-wheel but wanted to get some other input b-4 i invest in one, Also what is a good size 150 or 200 hundred or even larger... would it be good to get a power head also or just stick with the bio-wheel , worried about to much water movement!

Also what are your thought on air stone are they good for the tank or more for show.

Thanks in advance.

airstones are more for show.i would get yourself a small cannister.more ease of use, less cleaning, and much better in the long run.if not go with an ac50.i think that's the new name for it.there the best for water polishing.the cannister is the best for the bacteria, and will allow you to position the water flow where you want, plus they are quiet.

Canisters are the way to go for some people. If you want a planted tank, I would suggest one. A less expensive model that gets lots of decent reviews are the Rena Filstar line. If you just want a power filter, Penguins are nice because it keeps your biological filtration nicely oxygenated and separate from your mechanical filtration. Also, moving biowheels from one tank to another for cycling purposes couldn't be easier. Aquaclear filters are hang on back power filters that have a good following as well. I have heard some people that have issues with restarts on AC filters after power loss. My Penguins always start right up, if that means anything to you. As for how much filtration, I have two penguin 125s on my 29 gallon and it's adequate. If I were you, I'd get two Penguin 150s. That gives you good flow rate, mechanical filtration and there'd be no need for a powerhead. Plus, I don't feel that's too much current. Again, if your going planted, Penguins may not be the best choice, so, keep that in mind.

I can't say anything bad about the Aquaclear line. I've switched all my tanks to use these filters as the main filtration system. An AC 55 should be more than plenty. Also don't go cheap on the heaters for that tank. Tronic and Ebos are very well regarded.

i just picked up another cannister for my 90.i had an ehiem 2028 and thought i needed a bit more.got a knock-off on ebay.it cast me about $70 us delivered.just hooked it up and it's alot more powerful than the 2028.a little harder to clean because there are 2 lines to disconnect.but the bottom basket has a gasket, and the rest of it seems to be ok.i'll let you know next month when i clean it.

I have a 29 Gallon bowfront and I have an Emperor 280 (fancy Penguin) on it which I bought at Big Al's Online for half the price of the LFS. It creates a little current but the fish do not seem to mind at all and sometimes purposely swim in it. I may have over filtered a little but as people always say, you cannot have enough filtration.
