View Full Version : Angel ate himself into a stupor?

This morning my angel was lying on some plants near the bottom of the tank, tilted at a 45 degree angle. He was breathing a little hard, but nothing else in the tank seemed amiss.
I did a 50% water change and some pruning, which was overdue, and discovered some brand new platy fry that must have been born overnight. I took another look at the angel, and his stomach looked full to bursting. He seems to have perked up now and is swimming... a little slowly... around the tank.
Is it possible he overindulged on fry and ate himself into a stupor?

There are always fry in the tank (prolific platys + densely planted tank = too many fry), right now there are still at least two or three from this morning's batch. Several from every birth always seem to escape the angel - I think he catches the majority as they're being born, and those that make it into the bushy plants are pretty safe since he can't get into the tighter spaces. Sometimes he tries, but he really dislikes getting tangled up in the leaves and roots and usually goes on a plant-biting rampage after he escapes - he really puts on a good show :)
He really worried me this morning, but he seems to be improving. He wasn't interested in dinner tonight (a first) and he's still breathing a little hard. His belly is still very full looking, but since the water quality is good (NH3 & NO2 0, NO3 ~5, PO4 0.5) and the other fish seem well I'm hoping he just over did it at the all-you-can-eat fry buffet and will recover.

I'm terribly worried about this fish now. He's up and around, but staying near the surface, and his breathing seems laboured. He's still very full looking, and refusing food.
Is it possible he's eaten something that's stuck, or does this sound like constipation? Since he's refusing to eat, I'm not sure what to do - I'd try feeding him a pea but that doesn't seem to be an option right now. I'm fasting the entire tank, is there anything else anyone can suggest? I really adore this fish, and I've had him for a long time. I'd be absolutely heartbroken if I lost him and there was something I could have done that I didn't think of.
I'm reluctant to add MgSO4 (Epsom salts) to the tank because of the plants - as I understand it an over abundance of Mg prevents plants from absorbing other nutrients - but if it would help, I'm willing to try it.
Thanks for any help you can provide.

All the neons and cardinals are present and accounted for, he didn't eat one if that's what you meant.
He looks awful (no worse, no better, but certainly ill and not himself). I've added 1tsp/5g MgSO4 to the tank in the hopes that it's just constipation, but I'm starting to fear it's either a bacterial infection or intestinal blockage. I'm at a complete loss, I'm SO attached to this fish, I hope he makes it.

Oops. Sorry, no I meant your recent loss of a neon. At first, it was beginning to sound like a similar situation with the Angel.

Unfortunately he got much worse overnight. I'll be euthanizing him shortly. Other fish are showing similar symptoms, I'm at a loss as to what's causing this. Here's the thread in the General forum (http://www.aquariacentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=45045) detailing what's going on.
