Does anybody know if they make a compact fluoresent light bulb that screws into an existing incandescent socket that is in the plant growing range(5000-6500K)? I called GE and the lady said they didn't make anything in that range.

I saw one at my lfs today, actually. I think they are 10 or 11 watts. What size tank do you have?

It's going to be for a 10 gallon tank only....and it has two sockets already in the hood.

They had 6000k screw in bulbs at home depot in a 6pack for $9.80 they were hidden in the back at my HD near the garden section. I believe they were listed "cool white". If you cant get the right K rating just get More light. Like get two 20w 3000k bulbs more light will make up for the undesireable K rating.

You cannot make up for an undesirable K temp! Thats crazy. Wallmart sells a CF screw in. Its 10 watts. I have several of them and they work great. Cool white will not do. Also try this link.Mopst screw ins will take up to 15 watts, So with two bulbs you could be kicking 30 watts over your ten gallon. Should be able to grow some nice plants in there with a bit of co2

The 5k bulbs will work fine.

I dont think you're correct, I use 4 20w 3000k CF bulbs and one 20w 10000k to make it look good and my plants grow very well and pretty fast...and 3000k arent ideal. You can most definitely make up for too low or high k rating.
