My tank is about 3.5 weeks old, a 10 gallon. Im cycling it with 2 balloon mollies. When will there be enough algea etc. to sustain a pleco?

I'm not sure there even is a kind of pleco small enough for a 10g so unless you plan on moving the pleco to a bigger tank (75g or up for a common Pleco) in the not so distant future I'd advise against it.

You might want to consider some Otos instead, although even they might be a bit much for a 10g.

Algea wafers, some veggies etc... will be necessary to sustain one anyway though so how much algae is in your tank right now wont really matter if you feed them right.

Sorry, no plecos for a tank that small. Just won't work. Some plecos like clown and bristlenose plecos will stay much smaller than their common brethren but they will stilll grow too large for a 10g. Ottos would be a good substitute. In their case you don't necessarily have to wait for algae but you do need to wait for a very stable tank as they can be a tad sensitive. As for feeding, if you don't have enough algae they love sliced up zucchini. I give mine one slice a week.

I agree with TrickyD119 on the plecos. They just get way too big for a 10 gal, even the smaller types like the rubberlips etc.
IMO I think 1 or 2 Ottos would be okay for your setup, since you only have 2 balloon mollies in there right now.
In addition to the algea thats in your tank, you will need to feed other things like algea wafers and cucumber/zucchini like TrickyD said, so they get a balanced diet.

To address the situation of when to add new fish, when your test kits for ammonia and nitrites read zero and nitrates are around 10 ppm. If you don't have any testing supplies I suggest your next purchase not be a fish, but the test kit.

definatly feed your bottom feeder/algea eater food to eat as well as your mollies, they need more susbstance than the tank matter to keep them happy and heatly. My bottom feeders and plecs love hikari wafers- sinking or algea.

Yeah, I figured id just switch the pleco once he got big, since ive got a place that will always take them. Are there any good alternatives? Like smaller catfish bottom feeders etc? Do all ottos stay small, or is there a certain type to look for?
