anybody using compact flourescent lamp for their planted tank?
is this better than the ordinary flourescent bulb in terms og lighting and energy savings?

Lots of us are using the PowerCompact/Compact Flourescent lights. They put out more lumens, effectively making them "brighter" than their wattage rating. Also, the lights do not lose effectiveness like normal output (NO) lighting after 6 months. This means you don't have to replace them after 6 months, which is kind of a nice way to save a little, even though the PC bulbs are more expensive.

Depensd on the store. I order online from Big Al's because it is much cheaper than anything I could find locally.

I looked at big Al's, but I wasn't finding the info on what size the bulbs are and there where no guide lines on what watt on compacts equals what
length.

I have 2 tanks set up with PC lighting I got from AH supply. Excellet light much better than other florsent. Great place to do bussiness!

Well, what are you looking for? Compact bulbs aren't like NO bulbs, so there is no rule of thumb as to length = X Watts. Some 24 inch PC bulbs are 55W, some are 65W. Also, PC bulbs won't fit in a Normal fixture. So, if you have a PC hood, look at the pin arrangement on an old bulb, decide what length and wattage you need, then find it.
