Just bought one of those basic C02 systems for my 120litre heavily planted
tank.
The plants are doing very well but i thought i would give it that extra boost !
but I have a question that i cant seem to resolve looking at all the threads.

Do i use an air pump when this is in use ??, im so confused.
if so, do i use it during the day or at night ?

Also i have a brackish tanks set-up that contain vallis and Jarva fern.
Would this benefit that too ?

Sorry to sound stupid ! I just dont want my fish gasping for air !, i would be distraught if that happens ! :bowing:

I have the same system as you and no, you don't (can't really) need an air pump. Once you combine the ingredients and assemble the system pressure from the CO2 buildup in the canister forces the gas into the tank to the ladder system.

If you haven't started your first mix yet check the expiration date on the packets. I'm willing to bet they are no good.

Thanks !

I will check the expiry date later today, the company that produces them are just down the road from me.

I should pass this on to them ! :idea2:

If it is i will let you know !

The packets I had were outdated by almost a year. I have a DIY recipe I use. Fill to the first mark with sugar. Dissolve a 1/4 teaspoon of yeast into lukewarm water (nothing over 110 degrees) add 1 teaspoon of baking soda to the sugar then pour in the yeast mixture and top off with more warm water till you reach the second mark. Don't shake the canister but you can invert it once or twice to get things going. You can use more than 1/4 tsp. of yeast to get more CO2 production but the batch won't last as long. On a tank your size it might not be advisable. On my 65g its virtually impossible to overdo it using this system so I go with 1/2 tsp.

Just had a look at the packet.
Dont think its an expiry date, more production date !
mine is 01/2004. It must last longer than that in a sachet,

Anyway, i have removed my air pump, moved a small internal
filter higher to create a bit of watermovement and the plants seem to calm
the water thats near the co2 output.

Thanks for your advise,
