I jsut came back form the LFS, I was checking out what they have so i know when my tnak is done what to look for. But while i was ther ei got talking to the guy that was working. He said that if i picked one of the rare peacocks and bred them he would buy all the fry. This sounded like a good idea since then it would pay for some of the tank costs.
I was wondering what would be a good peacock or hap to choose. Which one would be most indemand and receive the best price.
I have a few ideas but want some input

Be careful. 99% of the people who say something like this mean it. But there are some who don't. One guy used to call breeders and say he wanted a 1000 or some large number of a certain species each week. Those who took the bait and set up the breeders needed to produce in those quantities, found that suddenly the price he had offered before plummeted to a pittance, and where else were you going to sell that many fish of one type. Or guys who would help you set up as a breeder and even help you set up a vender's licence so you could buy wholesale. Then your landlord showed up with all this information about how tanks destroy property with excess humidity and weight, or the zoning inspector showed up with as many complaints about a business in a residential area as your "buddies" could call in. Then guess who shows up to "help you out of a fix" at a dime or nickle on the dollar. Start out small and learn what uyou are doing. Be sure your landlord and the zoning restrictions in your area are met, and don't tick anyone off who might go on a vendetta against your side business.
It's hard to guess which fish will be the star. There do seem to be cycles in some old standard types. Timing is everything. If you are first with a fish in demand, you will make some money. If you are first with a fish that no one wants at that moment, oops!
Your pet shop guy is the kind of source you want, someone with a bit of experience in selling cichlids who should know what is likely to sell in the future. Even the smarties can't always be right. I knew someone who had seventy five breeding pairs of the original gold angels. This mutation did not show gold until the angels started to reach adulthood. Up to that time they looked like plain silvers. A new mutation that started out gold made his fish all curiosities instead of money machines.

I'm not plannign on starting up a breeding business. I jsut want a species of peacocks to breed.I'm not talking about 100s of babies i will have to get rid of.Plus this isn't a petstore that will say somethign then take it back.
There is LOTS of demand for peacocks around here,I'm jsut looking for one that would be different then the normal ones you see all the time( the sunshine peacocks, the royal blue peacocks).

What about an albino peacock? or the German reds? or the OB's? Those are all a bit different from the blue or yellow or blue and yellow. Jakes are also a bit different with the rusty reds and color mixes they have. I used to have some peacocks that were mostly black with a bit of blue. Kandeensis and maylandi both can look this way.
I think you're wise to stay small at this. It makes it more of a hobby and less of a job.

Well i think i have found some that i think are not that common(at least around here).
A. Saulosi "greenface"
A. "swallowtail"
A. Rebescens
A. turkis
My favorite is the greenface and the rebescens(even though some might think its common I haven't seen it around here, plus i like the red)
They might not be able to get the A. carolinae "swallowtail' since i can barely find and info about it on the internet.

i know what lfs your talking about if you want to breed peacocks, try the jake like mentioned above, or stewartgrantii, or even the c. kadango, all beautiful and good sellers, dont try the ob, try to stay away from cross breed, call aquarium illusions on mayfield rd and ask for shawn in fish ordering, tell him what you are looking to do, he will give you advice and also a good conection for cichlids,
bob
ps tell him robert fields told you to call, you might get a discount
