View Full Version : Uneven floor for 4 foot wide tank

The right corner is @ 1/4 inch lower than the left corner. It's fine
front to back.

Is some type of leveling needed for this "small" difference ? The
stand is a pine bowfront stand made by AGA. I can't believe this
50 pound stand can hold the tank and 600 pounds of water !

I am afraid a couple small shims would reduce the stand's
contact with the floor (commercial carpet).

Thanks,
Daniel

The stand will hold the weight, that's not a problem. But I would definitely stick a small shim under the right corner, especially if the stand wobbles. If not, it may not be as significant an issue. An unlevel tank may cause the water to stress the seam a little more. If you are really concerned about having contact with the floor the whole length of that side, make a tapered shim the length of the portion not on the floor.
Is it just a single corner on the right side (rear?) or 'both (sorry, not familiar with bowfront stand construction)' corners of the right side?

I'd probably try to shim the entire length of the base that is not making contact. Many DIY stands are sufficiently sturdy that you could shim only the corner, but the commercially produced stands don't seem to be overengineered. I'd want the load as evenly distributed over that base as possible.

I agree with JSchmidt.

Thanks...

The entire stand is touching the floor. If I use shims at the right
front and rear corners, I think a gap will occur, possibly leaving
uneven pressure. This would be like a bridge.

Do you think shims are nececsary in my case ?

I found this thread on Google of a discussion very similar to you predicament IMO.
