I've been reading that hatchetfish jump. How do you all with hatchetfish go about cleaning your tank without them jumping out?

Thanks,
Tracy

With great difficulty! I've lost 2 hatchetfish in the last week to jumping, and one of those was with the cover on....he got through a 1 inch hole a the back!

My suggestion would be to take the lid off only at cleaning time and if you can get away with cleaning with the lid on and just resting on the siphon tubing, or whatever you use to clean with, then so much the better!

Hatchetfish = jumpy little bugger!!

Thanks for the info. I guess I'll skip the hatchets. I appreciate your reply.

In my opinion you will lose out on a lot if you choose to skip over the hatchets because of their jumping abilities!!

They are in fact wonderful fish!! Probably all of us who have had them experienced some jumpers. However don't let that disuade you from these fish.

Just be careful while the lids off/open.!!

I find when you put them in bigger tanks, there jumping tendencies tend to subside.

Hatchett fish only jump when theres a source of food in the air. Ive had them .....never jumped :cool:

Maybe you could get a tank for them and not fill it all the way up, so there is room for them to jump, but so they can not jump out, I don't know how high they can jump so this might not be doable.
