Look into genetics. You can't just breed two blue dempseys. You need two non-blue dempseys that have the recessive blue depsey genes.

Hopefully my diaghram works, so if you breed the two with the recessive gene you come out with 50% that have the recessive gene, 25% normal JD's and 25% blue JD's.
It's incredibly tough, blue JD's are much less hardy than the normal JD's, and the grow much slower than normal JD's. Why not try something easier, like normal JD's?
EDIT: you have no idea how long it took me to make that one stupid little diaghram!

I started my BD breeding experiment early last summer.
It ended with my blues dying from a very bad case of gill flukes that just didn't respond to any medication. Incurable sickness is a common problem with BJD's
The theory I used was sound. I still think that it will work, but it will take a minimum of 24 months of breeding to get a stronger strain of BD. With no guarantee that it will work. Right now I really just don't have the time to start it over again, but maybe sometime in the near future I will try again.
Basically in a nutshell it is like this.
Keep in mind that this is a barebones/readers digest explanation. It actually gets allot more complexe than this.
I used Male blues and female regular and gold. For the reasons that males tend to be the tougher of the two if there is a relationship spat and the couple fight. It is usually the female that takes the brunt of the beatings.
2 male blues with 2 or 3 females for each. Let the male choose his mate and then remove the rest. One male gets the golds one gets the regulars. Reasoning for this is then there is less chance of inbreeding. Because it will eventually happen anyway trying this so you are just trying to cut down a little..
These are groups "A1" & "B2"
Assuming that you get both sets to breed you now have groups "C1" and "D2" in which roughly 25% of the fry now have the recessive blue gene that you want, as well as some of the stronger traits of the regular species of fish carry.
If you now cross "C1" with "B2" & "D2" with "A1" roughly 50% of your fry will have the dominant blue gene.
these are fry "E1". and "E2"
Turn around an breed "E1 and "E2" together getting "F1" then back with "A1" & or "B2" and you now have a much stronger strain of the Blue Dempsey. Although still crossbred with their original grandparents so they still won't be as genetically strong as the regular species but they should be a helluva lot tougher than what you can get now.
It takes quite a while and you will need quite a few tanks and money but it can be done.
I had nests laid before the blues died but nothing happened. There is belief/rumours out there by some hobbyists that blue JD's are given hormones when young by the breeders to make them sterile. This way keeping the market tight. I don't know whether it is true or not. But it is something to think about.

blue dempsey babies are very wimpy, for lack of a better word. but when they are born most of the babies are eaten by the jack dempseys and if they do survive they grow very slow. that is y they are so expensive.
in order to breed them you need to have 1 blue dempsey and 1 jack dempsey if you have 2 blues they will not have the right traits you want and you will have all jack dempsey fry.

I just read this at Mojo's site.
Some good info about the BJD's

For those of you that don't know.
The poster "bigguapote" is none other than Jeff Rapps.
If anyone knows about the BJD's it's Mr.Rapps.
