Hello all,

Today I did a water change of 25%. Normally I only change 10% of the water but I started treating my 30g tank for ich that was brought in with some new neons yesterday. So as per the instructions, I did a 25% water change before adding the Rid-Ich again. After I was done I did my normal water tests:

PH-7.6
Ammonia-.25ppm
Nitrite-0ppm
Nitrate- 2ppm

My Ammonia is normally 0ppm but there is (for some reason) a small amount of ammonia in our tapwater and therefor my ammonia goes up a little every time I do a water change....but its never a dangerous amount.

Anyway, later on today I notice my glowlights and neons starting to hover every once and awhile at the top (which is never good, I know) and all the fish in the tank save for the female betta are breathing rapidly.

Any thoughts or ideas are greatly appreciated, thanks!

Well, couple of things. If your tap water has ammonia in it, it is likely because they treat it with chloramines. That is to say, bonded chlorine and ammonia. A water conditioner like Prime or Amquel will clear that up for you in the future. I would say it is likely the combination of meds, ich and slight presence of ammonia that are bothering your fish. Ich meds are generaly not mild, and keep in mind, Ich usually prefers unprotected areas like a fishes gills before it even begins to infest the slime coated body. The fish may very well be battling that. Personally, the salt/heat treatment for Ich sounds a lot less sterssful. you can read about it in the articles forum off of the main forum Index right here at Aquaria Central. A most inforamtive article by a member here named Daveedka. Best of luck!
