Hi All:

I am new to this forum but not to aquariums. I have an empty 20 gal. tank that I have had a problem heating this winter so am not getting any new fish until spring. Had a submersible heater short out and knock me into the next room a couple months ago, so I am a little gunshy right now. Anyway, the tank (now unheated - just keeping it to help keep moisture in the air while furnace is running) has some white stuff growing in the bottom. It resembles and waves around like kelp. Any ideas on what this is and how to get rid of it if I need to?

Thanks, Kitty

The tank is near a window but not in any direct light. I am basically just adding water and letting it sit there with the filter running until the weather warms up some. It looks like some type of algae to me but it is bright white and the "leaves" are about 3 inches tall. There are some small algae spots on the side of the tank that are very green while this waving stuff right next to it is white.

Thanks for the help.

not algea "in my opinion"

hey kitty, i live in n.c also, i think its minerals in your water, i live at the beach and we have alot of slime, "it looks like snot" it grows on my bog wood in my tank, also we have to flush out the hot water heater several times a year. is a big pain to deal with but many water purifieres will help, just remember when you put water in to top off the tank, make sure you use other than strait tap water,. i lived in greensboro and the water was much better there. i have seen what your talking about many times and i wouldn't worry about it being bacteria or anything harmless but i wld do a good gravel spihion b4 you set it up again in the spring,.
so all in all i dont think you need to worry at all about it affecting your fish.
