I have the Walmart 55G setup and it looks like one of my lighting fixtures has died. I have tried new bulbs etc. with no luck. Being that it isnt the best lightign fixture in the world to begin with I am thinking of upgrading now. Can someone recommend a light setup for me. How much power should I be looking for? I have a few real plants and will probably be adding more as I go.

Thanks

a few things to consider would be the amount of live plants you want to keep and what kinds. i definitely prefer live plants and the way they make tanks look not to mention the beneficial properties. there are many low light plants you can get that will do with standard/medium lighting and of course more demanding plants need even more lighting. again it really depends on what type of plants you want. depending on how much you want to spend, right now if you search ebay you can find some good deals. one such deal is a jebo 48" power compact 4x55/65 light strip. usually can find it for ~$60 with anywhere from 15-20 for shipping. might even get lucky on a bid as i've seen occasional ones started at $1. this will give you 220 watts total for 4 watts per gallon. this is a good number to grow a variety of plants. keep in mind buying a light like this retail will most likely cost you an arm and leg ;) gl.
