View Full Version : Hyperventilating Ram
One of my Rams is breathing very quickly, rapid mouth and gill movements. I've checked and re-checked my water parameters and everything is good. I did introduce a new Ram 4 days ago making a total of 3 Rams. The new Ram is smaller but has "made friends" with the other of the previous two. I don't see them picking on the heavy breather so if anyone has ideas I'd like to hear them.

Ectoparasites on the gills?
I suppose it could be ectoparasites but I find it coincidental that it's acting this way after introducing the 3rd Ram. My tank has never had any problems and the new Ram was healthy when I introduced it. All other fish in the tank are acting normal.

These signs of stress can be linked to a pH difference between your water and the water the ram was in at the pet shop.

The Ram that has irregular breathing is one that has been in the tank for awhile and not the new one so it wouldn't be from a change in pH.
I did a water change and tank decor re-arrangement a day b4 he started acting this way. Is it possible he has something stuck in his gills (ie. something stirred up during the change)?

The only thing I can think of is stress, if he's been "replaced" by the newcomer, or if the change in scenery in the tank freaked him out--or both. I hope that's all it is--hopefully, he'll be able to settle down.
