two missing fish, one with a white growth =[

two of my tetras are MIA, and another has a white growth just in front of its eye. the growth is about the same size as the eye. the fish isn't acting strange, is eating and schooling during feeding. my first thought was ich, but that usually shows up around the gills, doesn't it?

any ideas what's wrong with the guy, how to treat, etc?

edit: i don't have a quarentine tank =[

I just dealt with the same type of thing but it was on the side of his body behind the eye. I think it is a part of ICH because he had ich and I started to treat and the next day I noticed the white patch and through out the day it just got larger and larger and then he died. not trying to scare you but that's what happened to me.

A lot of people told me that Neon tetras are one of the most sensitive freshwater fish and should only be put into a an established already cycled tank. Of course I made the mistak of getting them while doing a fish cycle and heard the bad news later.

white spots can be a number of things bacteria, fungal infections or even parasites. i treated for ich not long ago when i bought an american eel they sell as bait, it turned out the ich cleared up but i had to also treat him for hole in the head. >bummer< but he is doing better now.
i like and have used "copper safe", it treats many kinds of diseases. it is made by mardel company.
one main thing i wanted to say and the reason im posting is fish hide when they are sick, they hide under wood/rocks/plants anything or anywhere you wldnt think of looking. i would suggest that you move things around slowly as not to stress the tank any more than it already is, chances are if you go in and look for the missing fish they will float to the top, and my suggestion is to get ANY dead fish out of the tank as soon as you notice that it's missing,.
i also have found if i keep my tanks at a high range of heat it helps burn off ich and it will slow down growth of ich above 78 degrees,. i keep my tanks at 80 degrees,. maybe this might help a-little,. good luck

make sure you figure out what it is before you add any chemical fix-its. It also could be cotton fungus. Do a search on google or one of those for fish disease and see if you can find any pictures to help you identify it. Also, like tornangel said do a really good search for those missing fish, if they are dead in the tank somewhere it can mess with your water quality!
