I stopped at a local pet/garden store tonight, where they have a pretty nice selection of fish, if not an extremely knowledgeable staff.

Anyway, I went just to look, as I am trying to decide on a new fish for my 35 gallon. But, I was surprised to find that they had 2 of the types of fish i had been considering, plus another i hadn't known about!

They had:

*paradise fish! I haven't seen these at any of the LFS's i frequent, so i was a bit excited to find them. I didn't buy one of these because they were all very muted in color, even the males. The staff couldn't answer my question as to whether or not they develop more color as the age. Anyone know??

*boesmani rainbows! at least i'm pretty sure that's what they were... they were unlabeled and rather small, but the coloration was that of a boesmani. The staff could not ID them for me, but one girl told me she would sell them to me for the price of the phantom tetra in the same tank- $1.50!! I had a hard time walking away from that deal....

*Long-finned rosy barbs. I had heard of these, but never had seen them before. I really loved them, but i could only fit one, due to their size, and I read that they are schooling fish. Any experiences with these??

I am making myself crazy trying to decide what kind of fish to get!! Any input on these types of fish would be great.

I have a 35 gallon with:
5 serpae tetra
3 blackskirt tetra
4 ornate rainbows
4 cories
1 clown pleco

sorry such a long post!

I am in Massachusetts too. Where do you go? I am curious. The best place I have found so far is Tropical Isle Aquarium in Framingham on rt9. It has been around since the 1950's, the owner is a biologist and a chemist, and they are affiliated with the MA aquarium society. You should give them a try if you are near the area.

i used to be out near framingham (westborough), but now i am in springfield. I usually travel up to hadley, Exotic Fish and Pet World, which is awesome, but a little far. The place I was at tonight was AW Brown's in East Longmeadow. I'm sure you've never heard of these places :)

It's hard to find a good LFS around here, I've found.

does anyone think that a rosy barb might work? I'm thinking that it would be a really nice addition to my tank, if it wouldn't beat up on my other fish. I'm reading mixed reviews about them...

please help!

I think paradise fish get too big for the size tank you have, but I'm not sure. Tbe barb needs a school, so I would lean against that with the B.S tetra, maybe a few more of each of the tetras would be best, both would be more active in larger schools, as for the one other fish, I'm not familiar with it, have you tried a profile search on here and on a search engine?

i'm hesitant to add to my school of blackskirts, as the three I have are at least 5 years old and probably won't be around very much longer. i'm thinking of letting them live out the rest of their lives, then maybe getting some more serpaes when the blackskirts inevitably die of old age.

Basically, I was hoping to get one larger fish to serve as a centerpiece to the tank. I just don't know what...

a paradise fish will fit in your tank just fine, i'm just not entirely sure of how he'll react with your tankmates. my ex had one of them in her tank, he was really lazy and never fought with anything, but a really cool fish.
