I just took a trip to the Aquarium yesterday. I got a few good pictures.

One of the things I found really interesting was the stocking of the tanks. By home aquarium standards, all the tanks were WAY overstocked and many were stocked with fish that we would never consider keeping together, like the tank in Barnes and Noble with Discus, Altum Angels, and Neons. I guess that's what you can do with HUGE tanks though.

It was simply awe-inspiring to see what my angels and silver dollars would look like fully-grown in their natural habitat. I was so excited because I got a chance to see every fish I own right now. They had Angels, Discus, Silver Dollars, Neons, and a MONSTER of a Pleco that actually looked really similar to the one I have, just much larger.

The only problem with going to see all that is now I want to rearrange my tanks so they look completely natural. :dance

HECK YEAH I want a bigger tank! My mom would disown me though. She already had a fit when I brought home a 55. I've decided that when I build a house, i'll have a huge in-wall tank put in.

Oh, and pl*c, there was a big poster with the quote in your sig on it. :)

Some of the tanks are on central systems, so volume of water is quite different from apparent visible volumes. Another standard display practice is to pair a display with a vessel of equal or greater volume behind or below it - reduce stocking density by half or more depending on the volume of the "blind" tank, which is essentially a super-sump. Supportable bioloads just won't get it in a public attraction - it has got to be showy.

I confess to having used the same technique at home on some sump-equipped tanks. If a tank of X volume isn't enough, add one tank with 2/3 X volume and two more together with 1/3 X volume - double the system volume with veggie filters, get an apparent huge drop in bioload.

Howsa bout that filter!! whooooeee thats a big'un.

Thanks for the info! I have been planning on visiting the Belle Isle aquarium soon. It was supposed to close after 101 years, but the city of Detroit has figured out a way to keep it open. I can't wait to see all the fish as you did... normal size... normal setting....big tanks!!

It's been a while since I've taken the kids to the Baltimore Aquarium, you know when you live close to a place you just don't think of going there that often ;)
