Hello, I just bought a PC Flourescent fixture that came with this fitting:

65 watt 10,000ēK Actinic 460 nm

I want to keep/am keeping mostly low to medium light plants (i have around 2.3WPG and some CO2) They seem to be doing 'OK' but not great. I was wondering if a different color temp would be a lot better. I want to get some of the micro Swords

and it says that they prefer no more than 7000 kelvin and my light is 10,000K.

From the list of lamps here: http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=11422&N=2004+113346

or elsewhere, would you recommend any particular lamp/color temp rating?

thanks

(Oh, and I DID see the other thread on this that was pretty recent, but I was curious what you thought about my particular plant question!)
as far as color goes, i think i'd prefer the lower, less blue color.

and one more random thing...anyone else have trouble with having a glass top that has that silly plastic hinge blocking the light?

IME, plants don't care about the K rating nearly as much as we do. Anything between 5000K and 10 000K is useful to plants. I've got several bulbs on my tank, but the majority of the light is either 10 000K or 9325K and my plants grow like crazy. Unfortunately, the actinic bulb isn't really useful to plants, it would be best to swap it for something in the above range. Since the actinic isn't contributing much useful light, 2.3WPG of 10 000K & actinic isn't the same as 2.3WPG of, say 7000K or 10 000K. I'm guessing if you replace that bulb the plants will take off :)

And yes, I have one of those hinges, it drives me crazy - no matter how I place the lights it's in the way.

i turned my light around for now and i don't get the shadow anymore. the way the light was designed, the actual fixture and reflector is more to the front and there is 'dead space' in the back of the light. i spun it so the dead space was over the hinge. I think i am going to have Lowes cut me some custom glass to put in the hinge so that the hinge sticks out further and the opening part is a bit smaller, or i may just remove the darn thing all together...it doesn't provide all that much anyway! the glass will still flip back with out the hinge, it just is a bit more likely to fall into the tank...hmmm

as far as the bulbs go...unfortunately it is just one lamp with two different color temps inside, so i can't swap just half of it...:(
but i can replace the whole thing no sweat!
