i recently purchased a 55g tank, and i plan on keeping african cichlids in it. what are some suggestions as to what species would be good for it...i'm looking for colorful and some of the less aggressive species of mbuna. maybe a smaller number that are good breeders, so i could raise a few fry... i was also wondering what is good for making the water harder, besides chemicals. i know crushed coral helps with it.

Yellow Labs are great fish to keep in a 55 gal. Try this website- http://www.malawimayhem.com/ They have great profiles on Lake Malawi cichlids.

Regarding hardness, crushed coral will be your best bet. You can put it in a bio-bag and into your filtration unit (depending on what type of filter you have).

To go a little further... here's an article on that site that will give you some basic 'tank recipies'. It suggests species that are not only suitable for your tnak size but also be compatible.

Its great to look around as well and see what species you like and what catches your eye. There are lots out there! :D
