Define very high pH perchance? Are your fish in distress somehow? Usually pH is of minimal concern unless you are a breeder. Fish can adjust to higher or lower than ideal pH so long as you acclimate them properly.

I have found that the dip strips are close to useless (just my experience) 8.0 would be acceptable, for most fish. The real problem is that lowering PH is difficult, and unstable. Couple that with the fact that fish have more trouble with unstable Ph than they do with different than ideal Ph, and it's really not worht it to try to lower it. Gourami's should do fine with 8.0.
There are ways to lower it, but it's more hassle than it's worth.

8 isn't bad at all. And like Daveedka said, stable is better than ideal if ideal comes at the cost of additives and pH swings which cost you a lot of money, time and headaches as fish really don't deal well with change. If the fish are stressing, neither should you.
