filter media

it is recommended to replace/clean one a month. If you clean the filters, you should just rinse with clean, warm water. no soap or chemicals.

well the carbon does its job too well. every 2 or 3 weeks you should replace the carbon. I do every two weeks.

i have aquaclear and bio-wheel filters. when should i change their media??

For the Aquaclear filters, I thoroughly rinse the foam and Biomax in warm dechlorinated water about once every two weeks, and thoroughly scrub the filter once every 1-2 months. I don't use carbon in them and I don't replace the foam until it starts to fall apart.

Depends on how dirty it gets. with my aquaclear 300, I rinse out the sponge once or twice a month, I have had the same sponge for over a year. Biomax u can rinse out once a month up to 3-4 months depending on how dirty it is. Biomax should be replaced after 6 months in case the tiny pores are clogged with crap. I really never scrub out the entire filter... maybe once or twice a year i'll give it a rinse. I dnt have hard water so I dnt get much sediment. At this time I also take out the plastic propeller and rinse it off/ detangle it. Carbon should be replaced once a month or sooner if you use it. The ammonia resin insert can stay in for over a month if you use that.

I was going to address that very question earlier. Unless your bio-wheel deteriorates and stops working, don't ever replace it. It houses a majority of your nitrifying bacteia colonies, and you're in for another cycle if you replace it. Usually periodic cleaning is all it needs. Just rinse it off gently in some tank water during a PWC. The wheel may start to rotate unevenly (normal) as more bacteria develops on it. You only have to clean it if it stops turning completely.

Also...don't allow your bio-wheel to ever dry out or stay out of the tank water for more than a few minutes or risk killing off a majority of your beneficial bacteria.
