i recently added a light to my 120g tank and since this morning one of my barbs is constantly staying at the surface of the tank as if he was feeding off of it but hes been doing this for a few hours now, i also had to remove the air bar i had in the tank to operate a filter i put in there to replace an elcheapo filter that died. is the barb staying at the tank because it needs more oxygen? if so how come the other 13 fish in the tank aren't doing the same, any help on this matter is greatly appreciated.

okay i just turned the light off to see what would happen and my barb went on with his usual routine, i put the light back on and he was straight back up to the surface, now does this mean that if i continue to use a light in this tank im dooming the tiger barb to days of zoning out staring at the light or will he eventually stop and act like the rest of his school

thats the exact same thing some of mine do, but more so in the evening. They kind of just kick it at the top, then as soon as I turn my light off they start cruising around.

hmm

Is your light a standard one or submersible one?

I had a submersible one and 2 of my danios did the same thing, well, I stuck my hand in to get a floating leaf out I got a shock,I well unplugged the light did the same thing and no shock... took light out and saw it had condensation on the inside...not good...if it is submersible take it out and have a squizz just in case...

Sad news

it was a hard morning today as the t barb in question died during the early hours, the worst thing was that it was my 3 yr old daughter that noticed its passing and she was in tears as i tried to explain why it wasnt swimming still and had to be buried

picked on?

In my experience tiger barbs are tricky. I believe your barb was probably being picked on. When I started my tank 55Gal I had 7. Now I have 3 in that tank and 1 in a 10 gallon. I had to seperate because he is a psycho and would not leave any of them alone.Tiger barbs have a pecking order and I 've noticed if one fights the leader and loses he stays seperate (hides) from the others as much as possible. I believe my 3 that died were all female and couldn't take the stress.
