I have come across a 75-gallon reef ready (Oceanic) tank, stand, cover, protein skimmer, and 20-gallon sump - all about six months old - for the bargain price of $350. I want to know if that would be a great way to grow aquatic plants. According to my way of thinking, it seems that if a reef ready tank is best for maintaining water suitable for reef tanks (notoriously difficult to do), then it stands to reason that it would be great for FW planted tanks, no?

Thanks for any information. (By the way, I don't think the stand is an Oceanic stand and know that that affects the warranty - makes it void. However, I think the whole 'deal' is a good one.)

Do you know anything about the lighting? Likely it has actinic bulbs, the protein skimmer is not needed for a FW planted tank, the sump may gass off CO2. If the lights are good and you cannot get the (appropriate) lighting, tank and stand for less, it may still be a good deal. Is the tank drilled and plumbed? That could be an issue with a planted tank.

You can still get good CO2 on a trickle filtered tank, you just have to have presurrized CO2 and be able to move the water return around to you get less or no water ripple.

Take a pass on the actinic bulbs tho, they won't do you any good on a planted tank.

Harlock: I have read that the protein skimmer is not needed. I have also read a little about the CO2 issue, ubt I wonder if a solution cannot be found for that. (The tank is being sold here in Midland: I just don't want to pass up what seems to be a great deal. I have seen a set-up similar to that one at the LFS selling for over $1,000. The man selling it is a great guy, a school teacher, who had SW but cannot keep it due to his traveling plans in the summer.)

Timmain42: I realize that the actinic is not needed. I have in mind the lighting rig I would like to have. The tank just seems like to good a deal to pass up, but I want some clearer-headed advice, you know?

Thanks both of you!

There's a 180 gallon in Midland too, with stand and accessories for $600. I actually considered that one myself. Well, $350 is still a good deal for tank and stand and cover it's just the extra equipment. Of course, you don't even have to use the sump if you don't want to. If you've got the cash and would be happy with a 75, I say go for it. I've been pricing larger tanks and a 125 gallon by itself costs $300.

THe 180 has been sold. I also checked that one. I was really mad about it, too. In fact, she sold both of the tanks (55 and 180) to the same person, I think. Unfortunate...
Anyway, thanks for the input. I just don't know enough about the prices of that size of tank - and the ones around here seem to go too fast!

Heh, I barely see any in San Angelo, so I use the Thrifty Nickel's search engine and include surrounding towns. Of course I get stuff listed in Austin, Lubbock, Waco, etc. but some are close enough for a drive if it's a decent deal. I do see Abilene and Odessa-Midland a bit.

Thanks for the help. I am going to go look at it. I really love the planted tanks. I guess bottom line is: would that tank's price be worth it or not? Ugh, decisions, decisions...
