A local fish store just started stocking amano shrimp. I bought 7 today bringing my total to 10. For those of you who have just discovered how great ghost shrimp are, try amanos. They grow to be an inch 1/2 and live much longer than ghost shrimp. My 3 original shrimp are alive and well after almosta year. They are also the original algae-eating shrimp and are always pulling algae off of the plants. Mine are as comical as cories to watch. They swim up and down the aquarium like cories and when they bang into eachother they kind of touch eahother just to say hi. They are not afraid of anything and will even run up and grab a piece of food out of the mouth of the much larger fish. When I drop sinking pellets in for the catfish, the shrimp will try to snatch it and run off with it! They are so much fun to watch. I highly recommend them. :D Is anyone else keeping amanos?

Which store is that? I'm still trying to find good stores in the area. I'm in Lexington, and the best I've found so far is Tropic Isle in Framingham.

Very cool. I keep ghost shrimp as I have found them in the local waters since I was a young boy and just fell in love with them. Mine live quite a while if they can avoid the gravel vac. I have trouble seeing them without the light up top... stupid me. I am curious, I know you have gouramis, do they leave the amano's alone?

HEY BOSTONIANS! I Just moved to LA from boston in October. I'd love to know of any good stores around there too since my Brother keeps fish. I am close to buying some amanos and cherries. thanks for the encouragement!

My gouramis now belong to my mother. I had them (dwarf and pearl) with my amanos and they ignored them. Now I have just angels, they're obviously even bigger and they ignore the amanos as well. Amanos are a pretty decent sized shrimp. But my angels are not yet full grown so I will have to wait and see.

I love Tropical Isle. This place is called Uncle Ned's. They even have a forum online where you can ask him questions and ask him to hold products. He lists every month the species he has comming in. Right now he has amanos, cherry red ($6 each, too much for me) and zebra shrimp. It's off of 495 not that far from Tropical Isle. http://www.unclenedsfishfactory.com/

Also there is this little place called All Things Fishy in Marlboro. They sell cheap used and new fish tanks and stands. I bought some anubias nanas there for $3.50 each. They have 6-8 leaves on each plant. Its a great buy.

Keep us updated, please. I really do enjoy shrimp in a tank and would like something other than the ghosts I normally stock.

This is only partially related,

Anybody ever run into any problems keeping dwarf frogs with amanos or cherry shrimp? Or with ghost shrimp, for that matter. Any shrimp?

Used to keep ghost shrimp with a school of danios, never had any problems but I have yet to keep the frogs with any shrimp, but would like to.

I'm a little leery of any animal staying with my frogs, although I have heard that some people do make happy communities with them.

I've heard stories of shrimp actually eating limbs off of the frogs...

I like the way I can tell what my ghosts have been eating.(get some green coloration when they munch on algae wafers). They are great fun looking forward to getting an amano for a ten gallon that I'll be moving my bolivian rams to.

Anyone have any experiences with shrimp eating dwarf cichlid eggs (When my Apistos spawned they did a good job of keeping shrimp away, but they are cave spawners. Looking for advise on how pit spawners handle them.

Harlock, have you read the article on www.aquarticles.com about mini planted tanks. Sound like it's right up your ally.

I've seen other similar setups and have often wondered about how fun it would be. Before I delve into smaller tanks, however, I want to buy my dream tank of 125 gallons and plant the crud out of it, throw in some guppies, small tetras and pygmy cories and see what happens. Loads of small, colorful fish aganist a heavily planted background in a huge tank just sppeals to me more right now. After I do that, Maybe I'll go for a desktop micro setup.
